On May 18th, we honored 74 fellows and 13 mentors across eight school districts. The celebratory luncheon included a warm welcome from Dr. Barry Munitz (President and CEO) and congratulatory messages from Jonathan Victor (Board Chair), Jocelyn Tetel (Vice President of Advancement at Skirball Cultural Center), and Jerry Harris (Executive Director). On behalf of the mentors, Lisa Hom, from Atwater Avenue Elementary School, walked us through her two-year experience and recognized her team’s hard work. On behalf of the fellows, Irene Carter, Mary Martinez, and Sarah Spero shared their journeys of growth and learning.

We are thrilled to announce that Suzanne Huerta, a teacher at Whitaker Elementary School in Buena Park, has been named a finalist for the prestigious This award, the highest recognition for K-12 STEM educators in the United States, celebrates Suzanne’s outstanding contributions to mathematics education and her commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment for her students.

Suzanne’s dedication to her students shines through her innovative teaching methods and deep involvement in the educational community. She has been instrumental in designing and leading lab sites for the 51·çÁ÷ Special Education Community of Practice, where she fosters rigorous expectations, expansive IEP goals, and inclusive classroom practices that engage students in critical thinking and conceptual understanding of mathematics.

Beyond her classroom, Suzanne’s impact extends to organizing an annual SPED gala, a heartwarming event that celebrates the unique gifts and talents of her students and their families. This gala, born out of Suzanne’s genuine love and care for her students, exemplifies her commitment to honoring individuality and fostering a sense of belonging within her school community.
